Why is it that music defines who people are?

Everywhere you go, you hear people telling you what they're listening to. It's almost as though the music defines them. Why can't people define themselves? On all chat clients you have this little blurb saying what music they're listening to. On Myspace, it tells you what someone is listening to. On blogs everywhere, you have people reciting the lyrics to songs, or telling you how some such band is affecting their lives. And those people who actually memorize band names, song lyrics, band members, and the history of every band in existance... God, talk about a bigger waste of time than this Blog.

One of the first questions someone asks when two people meet for the first time, is "So what kinda music do you listen to?" It's almost as though the first impression is based entirely on your preference, like someone's personality is uncovered by their favorite genre or band.

Good gravy people, get a life. Music is NOT that important. Define yourself by your actions, not by what you choose to listen to.

If music isn't that important than how can you "Rock?" Music is one of the most basic forms of human expression and the emotional impact it has on the lives it touches is undeniable. Although musical preference doesn't dictate personality traits the fact that music is such a huge part of society makes it an easy place for people to turn to build interpersonal connections upon. That's why it is an easy go to in ice breaking situations.
